If you had a chance to read the story of how we met, then you learned that one of the reasons we fell for one another was our shared value of helping others - especially those who are most vulnerable in society. The unhoused gentleman from our first two dates created a lifelong memory for us both as he made us laugh and also become emotional as we heard his story. It was in those moments that we almost instantly could see that sense of shared empathy in one another and our genuine commitment to do some good in this world. That people are deserving of respect, understanding and love and complex life stories don't deny them that right.

What Kate didn't know in that moment was that Harshal had a very personal reason for why he felt such immense empathy for each unhoused person he met. He would like to share more of that story with everyone -

"It is no secret that I am an only child with an extensive extended
family on both sides. I grew up extremely close with my cousins; so
much so that sleep overs and pool parties were nearly a weekly
occurrence while growing up in LA in the 1990s. One of many
cousins was Navnit, who was for all intents and purposes my older
brother. In fact, for several of my formative years we lived under the
same roof. He is responsible for my ability to ride a bike and love of
comic book characters with edge like Daredevil and Spawn.
Unfortunately, Navnit also experienced a lot of pain in his early life,
leading him to develop both substance use disorder and schizophrenia
very young. This combination resulted in a cycle of mental health
struggles and homelessness that I witnessed my older brother
experience countless times. It became my goal to one day be able to
help Navnit; it's one of the reasons I became an emergency medicine
doctor. This connection also inspired a lifelong desire to help the unhoused both through direct action and through supporting organizations dedicated to upholding the humanity and dignity of the unhoused. We have chosen to support Midnight Mission of Los Angeles because of the good work they have done for the community of unhoused individuals, including Navnit prior to his death in 2024."

It is our goal to split all of the donations received to both Midnight Mission of Los Angeles and St. Louis Street Patrol in honor of Navnit and the gentleman who helped us fall in love that week in St. Louis. It is also our goal that, within our first year of marriage, we will match the donations you make in their honor. We believe that this is the most meaningful way we can begin our time together as a married couple and we are so grateful for anyone who chooses to support us with this in any way.
